Australia is one of the most popular migration destinations for Nigerian professionals — and for good reason. With a high standard of living, strong economy, and a growing Nigerian diaspora community, thousands of Nigerians successfully migrate to Australia each year.
🎯 Quick Summary
The most common pathways for Nigerians are the Skilled Independent Visa (SC 189), State Nominated Visa (SC 190), and Student Visa (SC 500). Success depends on your occupation, English proficiency, and point score. A registered migration agent dramatically improves your chances.
Step 1: Understand Your Visa Options
There is no single "Nigerian to Australia" visa — rather, you must qualify under one of Australia's migration streams. The most common for Nigerian nationals are:
- Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189): Points-based, no employer or state needed
- State Nominated Visa (Subclass 190): Sponsored by an Australian state or territory
- Student Visa (Subclass 500): Study pathway leading to PR
- Employer Sponsored (Subclass 482): If you have a job offer in Australia
- Partner Visa (Subclass 820): If married or de facto with an Australian citizen/PR
Step 2: Check the Points Test
For skilled visas, Australia uses a points-based system. You need a minimum of 65 points to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect, but the actual invitation cutoff is typically much higher — often 85–90+ points for popular occupations.
Points are awarded for: age, English proficiency, overseas and Australian work experience, educational qualifications, partner skills, and state nomination.
⚡ Pro Tip
Many Nigerians can boost their score by obtaining an Australian study qualification or Exceptional Claim in English (scored at superior level). Our agents specialise in maximising your points score before lodging your EOI.
Step 3: Get a Skills Assessment
Before you can lodge an EOI, you must have your skills assessed by the relevant Australian assessing authority for your occupation. For example:
- Engineers → Engineers Australia
- Nurses → AHPRA
- Accountants → CPA / CAANZ / IPA
- IT Professionals → ACS
- Teachers → AITSL
This process can take 3–6 months and requires you to submit detailed evidence of your qualifications and work experience. We help clients prepare comprehensive skills assessment applications with a high success rate.
Step 4: Achieve the Required English Score
Strong English is essential. You'll need to take one of these tests:
- IELTS: Most widely accepted. Target 7.0+ in each band
- PTE Academic: Computer-based, faster results. Target 65+
- OET: For healthcare professionals only
Higher English scores earn more points — scoring 8.0+ in each band on IELTS adds 20 points to your profile.
Step 5: Lodge Your EOI via SkillSelect
Once you have a positive skills assessment and English test results, you can create a profile in Australia's SkillSelect system. This is where you nominate which visa subclasses you'd like to apply for and provide your points-related information.
Invitations to apply are issued in rounds — Home Affairs invites the highest-scoring candidates from the pool. The process is competitive but very manageable with expert guidance.
Step 6: Receive an Invitation and Lodge Your Application
Once invited, you have 60 days to lodge a full visa application with all supporting documents. This is the most critical stage — an incomplete or poorly prepared application can result in a refusal. Our team prepares every document to the highest standard before submission.
Step 7: Await a Decision and Prepare to Move
Processing times vary. Currently, the Subclass 189 is processing at around 7–12 months for most applicants. Once your visa is granted, you have an initial 12 months to make your first entry into Australia, and the visa is valid for 5 years.
